- SOME THOUGHTS ON PHOTOGRAPHY... AND OTHER TOPICS
Greetings Friends,
Here is another one of my infrequent, and informal, email newsletters...
My 2005 workshop season is now in full swing. As you receive this newsletter, I have just completed two back-to-back sessions of my "Expressive Black and White Print" workshop. It is exciting to me that there remains such a strong interest in "good old-fashioned" traditional black and white photography. In fact, this interest seems to actually be growing outside of the U.S. In the past few years, we have seen an increase in the number of international workshop participants. In a recent workshop, 50% of the people were from outside the U.S.! In 2004 and 2005, we have had workshop participants from the following countries: England, Spain, Switzerland, Singapore, Sweden, Italy, Norway, and China... not to mention a number of participants from Canada.
Next month I will be conducting the 19th annual offering of the "Southwest Landscape: A Sense of Place" workshop with my long-time friend Ray McSavaney. That workshop filled almost immediately after the workshop brochure was released. The response to my "Fine Tuning the Expressive Print" workshop this year necessitated the addition of a second session (which still has a couple of spaces available) scheduled for February 7-12, 2006. In addition, we still have a few openings left in the following "Expressive Black and White Print" workshop sessions here at my studio: November 1-6, 2005, February 21-26, 2006, and April 4-9, 2006, along with some openings at my large format workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, September 11-23, 2005.
For further information about the workshops, feel free to contact Laura at 831/659-3130, via fax at 831/659-5509, or via email at laura@johnsexton.com.
Wishing you the best this spring,
John

JOHN SEXTON ORIGINAL PRINT AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE ONLINE
From time to time, I make special print offerings available at reduced prices. The Special Collectors Edition offering of "Trees, Valley Fog Dusk, Yosemite Valley, California," Plate 50 in "Quiet Light," is now available for order online. This landscape image is one of my favorite images. The on-screen reproduction is not able to convey all of the subtle nuances of the original print.
To learn more about this print, or to order, follow this link:
http://store.yahoo.com/ventanaeditions/joseorpr.html
This print is available for a limited time at the very special price of $500. My 11x14" prints normally retail in galleries for $750, so the savings over the retail price is significant. This print is personally printed by me (as are all my prints), processed to current archival standards, signed, mounted, and overmatted on 16x20" 100% rag museum board. Prints will be delivered in approximately four to eight weeks from the date of order via UPS, carefully packaged and fully insured.
Furthermore, if you take advantage of the Ventana Editions special coupon offer mentioned above for 10% off of online orders, your net price for each Collectors Edition print ordered will be $450.00, plus $5.00 for insured UPS ground shipping. Be sure to enter the discount code "•••••" during the checkout process to receive your discount. Those of you who have ordered my prints in the past know we use "bullet-proof" packaging to help ensure your print arrives in perfect condition.
If you prefer to order over the phone, or if you have any questions, call 831-659-3130 from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Thursday to place an order. In addition, you can contact us at: info@johnsexton.com
KODAK PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS CATALOG AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD
The current Kodak Professional Products Catalog L-9 is available for download in Adobe PDF format at the following link:
http://www.kodak.com/global/en/professional/support/techPubs/l9/l9.pdf
This catalog lists the Kodak Professional photographic products, along with their respective catalog numbers (important when special ordering through your favorite photographic retailer) and suggested list prices.
It has become increasingly common that some sales clerks and customer services representatives at photographic retailers have a very limited knowledge of photographic products - especially when it relates to films and papers. Having the proper catalog number will make it easier for you to request, or when necessary special order, photographic products to fulfill your needs and desires. Some of you may have noticed that not long ago the Kodak Cat. numbers for Polymax Fine Art paper changed. The new Cat. numbers are included in this version of the Kodak L-9 catalog.
ILFORD EMERGES FROM RECEIVERSHIP
In my last newsletter I mentioned that Ilford Imaging had entered into a receivership last August. I am pleased to report that on February 21st Ilford issued a press release announcing they had emerged from receivership that day through a complex and innovative management buy out. The new company will trade under the name of Ilford Photo with a new corporate name of Harman Technology.
Here is a link to the official Ilford press release, describing the details of their new corporate structure.
http://www.ilford.com/html/us_english/pr/PRht.html
It is indeed good news that Ilford has successfully emerged from their difficulties. I hope that they will be able to continue manufacturing high quality silver halide films and papers for many years to come.
As has been mentioned previously in this newsletter, it is important for silver-based photographers to continue to use the films and papers they are passionate about. Hopefully, we will all be able to make our own aesthetic decisions - when it comes to the materials we use - rather than those decisions being made by manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors. As it has been said, related to many things in life, "use it or lose it!"
