- JOHN'S
UPCOMING EXHIBITION AT THE ANSEL ADAMS GALLERY IN YOSEMITE
Greetings,
It’s a busy time for us. I have
just finished the darkroom work for my upcoming
exhibition at the
Center for Photographic Art. Anne and
I are now working on completing
the mounting, matting,
spotting, and framing of the show. The
exhibition will
be installed in the next few days, and opens to the
public this Saturday, July 3. Along with favorite photographs of mine
that go back more than thirty-five years, I am including
several
never before seen images in the show.
On Saturday,
July 10, I will be presenting a lecture
on my work, followed by an
opening reception, book
signing, and print raffle. All of the above
events are
free and open to the public. We are pleased and flattered
that a number of friends are coming in from out of town for the
festivities at the CPA. You can find out more information about the
exhibit, as well as the Saturday, July 10 events below.
Anne and I have donated an 11x14" print of my image Black
Oak, Fallen Branches, Plate 33 in my book Listen to the
Trees, for a raffle to benefit
the Center for Photographic Art.
I am hoping that those
who are not able to attend the July 10th
events will
call the Center and purchase tickets for the print
raffle. You can find details about the print raffle below, along with
a reproduction of the image.
I also
wanted to let
readers know about an exciting exhibition, Ansel Adams: Portrait
of America, Photographs
from the Collection of Anne Adams Helms,
on display at
the Monterey Museum of Art from July 10 through October
3, 2010. I have included more details about the exhibit in the
information below.
I am hopeful that those who might
be in Carmel to see my exhibition will make the short
trip to
Monterey to see the Ansel Adams exhibition, and
vice versa (I suspect
there will be a lot more people
going to see the Ansel Adams
exhibition than my
show!!!).
Finally, I wanted to
let you
know about my upcoming exhibition and lecture at the Ansel
Adams Gallery later this summer. There is additional information
below.
All the best,
John

I am pleased to announce that my
traveling
retrospective exhibition John
Sexton: A Photographer’s Journey will be on display at
the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, California
from July 3
through August 27, 2010. The last time I had
a large exhibition of my
work in my own
“backyard” was my exhibition at the
Monterey
Museum of Art in 1994. I am looking forward to having
the opportunity to share images with my many photographic friends and
neighbors here on the Monterey Peninsula. If your travel
plans will
bring you to this area, I hope you will take
the opportunity to
come by and see the exhibition.
On Saturday, July
10, I will be presenting a lecture
and book signing from 2:00 to 4:00
pm, which will be
followed by an opening reception in the gallery
from
4:00 to 6:00 pm. Both events are free and open to the public.
Included in the exhibition and presentation will be some
new images, as well as earlier photographs from
my more
than thirty-five year career in
photography. During the
lecture I will illustrate the
evolutionary process of
some of the images
from the negative to the finished
print, exploring a
number of the creative controls I use in making my
silver gelatin photographs. In addition, I will show some unique
Ansel Adams images and discuss his influence on my photography. A
book signing will be held following the lecture.
During the opening reception there will be a raffle for one of my
11x14" original silver-gelatin prints valued at
$1,000. All
proceeds will benefit the Center for
Photographic Art. Additional
information about the print
raffle can be found below.
A portion of
this exhibition was on display at Oregon
State
University in 2009. The exhibition will be
traveling to other venues in the future, and
announcements will be made in future issues of my
newsletter.
I would like to thank Light Impressions,
as well as Kodak Professional, for their support of this
traveling
exhibition, and Freestyle Photographic
Supplies for their most
generous support as the
exclusive sponsor of exhibitions at the
Center for
Photographic Art.
You can learn about the
exhibition, opening reception, print raffle, and lecture here.
For more information about the Center for Photographic Art and their
many programs check out their web site. I look
forward to seeing a number of you on July 10.

ANSEL ADAMS: PORTRAIT OF
AMERICA EXHIBITION AT MONTEREY MUSEUM OF
ART
Ansel Adams: Portrait of
America,
Photographs from the Collection of Anne
Adams Helms, will be on
display from July 10 through
October 3 at the Monterey Museum of Art,
La Mirada
facility. The Monterey Museum of Art is the exclusive West
Coast venue for this exhibition of more than seventy of Ansel’s
iconic images. It is a rare opportunity to see this
collection of
photographs from Ansel and
Virginia’s daughter, Anne Adams
Helms.
This exceptional collection of images is one
of the
complete Museum Sets that Ansel produced. Ansel began
printing for the Museum Set project in July of 1979... the
day before I started working as his photographic and technical
assistant. I assisted Ansel in the darkroom on all of these prints.
It was the largest single printing project Ansel undertook during his
long photographic career.
There is a
members only
preview and opening reception on Thursday,
July 8 from 6:00 to 8:00
pm. In addition, the following
day, Friday, July 9 is Members Only
Day, and the La
Mirada facility will be open from 11:00 am to 7:00
pm.
You must be a Museum member to see the exhibition that day. The
exhibition opens to the public on Saturday, July 10.
For more information about the exhibition and the Monterey Museum
of Art, check out their web
site.
